Materials Collected

The Florence Powell Minis Room Collection of Lane Library contains non-circulating resources that describe and illustrate the history, literature, and personalities of Savannah and its surrounding area, including coastal Georgia.

Books of history and literature form the bulk of the Collection, which includes complete sets of the publications of Conrad Aiken and Flannery O’Connor. Current materials are added to the Collection as they are published, and appropriate out-of-print works are pursued and purchased when possible. The Minis Room also houses rare or expensive items and duplicates of works in the general collection. Publications of Armstrong State University are included. Papers of prominent Savannahians, journals, media materials, maps and vertical file materials may be added to the Collection, although the emphasis remains on collecting books.

Photographs from two sources in the Minis Room Collection have been published on the Web as Digital Collections. Living in Savannah displays digitized images, originally photographed by Armstrong students, from a two-volume scrapbook of circa 1940 Savannah street scenes. Art Work of Savannah, taken from the 1893 book by Charles M. Olmstead, contains digitized photographs of Savannah buildings and locations.

Finding What You Need in the Collection

Books and media in the Minis Collection are cataloged in GIL, Lane Library’s online public access catalog. Researchers may search GIL by author, title, and subject to identify materials housed in the Minis Collection. Manuscript collections are also described with Finding Aids.

Policies & Procedures

Researchers are asked to sign in at the Reference Desk and present a photo ID prior to requesting materials from the Minis Collection. After using GIL to identify books in the Collection, researchers should write down the titles and call numbers of items needed, and give the list to the reference librarian on duty at the Reference Desk on the first floor of Lane Library.

The reference librarian will retrieve the requested materials from the Minis Room. The reference librarian will decide how many books can be obtained at a time. Researchers may use the books in the reference area of Lane Library. Minis Collection books do not circulate outside the Library.

Florence Powell Minis Room is open by appointment. Materials from the Minis Room are generally available, though, though the Reference Desk.
