Upcoming Retirement: Frederick Smith, Jr.
Please join the library as we congratulate Frederick Smith, Jr., Professor and Interlibrary Loan Librarian on his upcoming retirement. There will be a reception on April 13th, from 3-5pm in room 1300 of the library.
Mr. Smith is retiring on May 31, 2018. Mr. Smith holds degrees from the University of Georgia (ABJ Journalism,), and Florida State University (M.L.S.in Library Science). At the time of his retirement, Mr. Smith has provided 32 years of distinguished service to Georgia Southern following ten years at (then) Columbus College. For most of his career, he served as Department Head of Access Services. During his tenure at Georgia Southern, Mr. Smith served as the Library’s liaison with the Music Department. Mr. Smith has been active in professional associations at the state and regional levels. He is currently President of the Georgia Library Association. He traveled extensively during his career, with over forty presentations and training sessions on promotion and tenure and access services related issues. He is the author of numerous journal articles and served on the editorial board of the Journal of Access Services since its beginning, and wrote a regular feature for that journal for over a decade. In addition to his departmental duties, Mr. Smith was elected or appointed to serve on numerous library, university, and ad hoc committees, notably chairing the University’s last Statutes Revision Committee. Other University service includes Faculty Senate, Senate Executive Committee, twice chairing the Faculty Development Committee, and twice chairing the Faculty Welfare Committee. In that role, he worked closely with the Provost to develop a five year performance review for deans. Mr. Smith is one of only three Library faculty members at Georgia Southern to ever attain the rank of full professor. For these and other contributions to the Library, the University, and the profession, Professor Smith has earned the title of Professor Emeritus.
