Benefit for GSU's Henderson Library Anchors
'Main Street 1943' Celebration in November

In mid-November, Statesboro takes a nostalgic look back at life on the World War II homefront with a series of downtown events and activities designed to honor all U.S. military veterans.

Anchoring the “Main Street 1943” celebration is a musical revue that serves as a benefit for the Zach S. Henderson Library at Georgia Southern University. The show, titled “We’ll Meet Again,” commemorates in words and song the contributions of the men and women who made up what newsman Tom Brokaw has called “The Greatest Generation.”

Organized by the Friends of the Zach S. Henderson Library, the show is scheduled Friday, November 12, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Emma Kelly Theater of the Averitt Center for the Arts. It features songs that were popular on the American and British homefronts during World War II. Narration links the musical numbers to significant moments during the war years.

Performers include members of the GSU Music Department faculty and artists from the community at large. The production is directed by Dr Tamara Watson-Harper, director of the Georgia Southern Opera, and is scripted by Dr. Robert Dick, a retired professor.

Tickets for the benefit are now on sale through the Henderson Library (call 912-6815115 for more information). General admission tickets are priced at $20 each. Special “patron” tickets, priced at $50 per individual and $75 per couple, are also being sold. Patrons will receive priority seating at the show and be invited to a pre-show reception.

In addition to the musical revue, the Friends of the Library organization is sponsoring an exhibition of World War II memorabilia on November 11 and 12 in the third-floor studio of the Averitt Center. The exhibition, which has a local focus and features Statesboro and Bulloch County photographs and other memorabilia from the war years, will be open for public viewing Thursday, November 11, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday, November 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will also be open to the public for two hours immediately following Friday evening’s benefit show.

More information on “Veterans Appreciation Week” will be posted to the Henderson Library web page soon.
