SUBJECT: Library computing
Comment: Just wondering why with all the new computers in the library none of
them have "zip drives anymore". I have been a student here since 99
and with all the upgrading that is supposively going on, all I have witnessed
is more hastle to get my work done. Please consider putting the zip drive
back in the computers soon, all the other labs in building have them. And, when
I come the libary to my work at night that I have saved to the zip disk, I can't
do.
RESPONSE:
Thank you for your suggestion. I shared it with David Lowder, Systems Department
Head, and he provided the following response:
A large portion the computers in many computer labs on campus are upgraded each
year using money from the Student Tech fee. In order to get the best possible
price, all of these computers are configured exactly alike and ordered all at
one time.
The decision to drop zip drives from the entire order was made by Information
Technology Services after discussions with various lab managers across campus. Zip
drives have a high failure rate and there are compatibility issues. There are
several different formats of zip disks in use and the newest drives are not compatible
with many of the earlier zip disks that are still in use.
The Library still has a large number of computers available with zip drives, but
we are aware that they may not be on the computers that have all of the software
that a student might need to use. The Library's computer support staff removed
zip drives from some older computers that were destined for surplus and they are
working to install them into some of the newer computers in the MAA.

I would add that signs indicating which computers have zip drives are being placed
in the MAA.
