SUBJECT: Copiers

The semester has just nicely started and 2 of the only 4 copiers on first floor are out of order. So we are paying twice as much for considerably worse service. Way to go library!! I hope your contract with the new supplier has an escape clause for lousy service.

RESPONSE:

Thank you for your comments. I forwarded them to Fred Smith, head of Access Services, since that department is responsible for the Library's part of the photocopying service. Here is his response:

We're sorry you had a bad first impression of the new copiers. One of the copiers on the first floor with an out of order sign on it wasn't out of order. A cable needed to connect it to the network was lost in shipping, so it was never in service. We probably shouldn't have put an out of order sign on it, since this did give you and others the wrong impression. We also had the misfortune to introduce thecopiers during one of the wettest weeks in recent memory. Humidity causes paper jams in copiers. The Print Shop manager, Brenda Aytes, is as knowledgeable about copiers as anyone on campus, andshe assured us that she was having just as many problems because of the humidity. We are also still learning ourselves how to trouble shoot the new machines. As we get more proficient at fixing smallproblems, patrons should see fewer out of order signs. This model of copier was chosen after a thorough, careful examination of the current market for digital copiers. It got top marks by independenttesting services, and we tested it thoroughly ourselves before selecting it. We are confident that it will provide good service for years to come.

Please let us know if you have other concerns or questions.
