SUBJECT: Wireless internet!

Comment: What would it take to make the building (and the campus) Wi-Fi enabled so that students and faculty could access the internet from any of their pocket pc/palm type devices? Emailing notes, browsing the internet, etc while sitting on the 2nd floor makes for a great environment!

RESPONSE:

Thank you for your questions. I asked David Lowder, head of the Library's Systems Department to respond. Here's his reply:
The library will be adapted for wireless access as part of the overall campus plan for wireless computing. The Information Technology Services department is responsible for all campus networks and they are very interested in adding wireless technology to the library but funding has not been available.

The new addition to the library will certainly include wireless access. Whether the existing building could be wired before the upcoming addition/renovation project or after is still uncertain. We wouldn't want to spend funds on a project like that only to have everything torn out and replaced in the renovation project unless we could reuse most or all of the hardware.

Security is also a major concern. Presently wireless access on campus is limited to computers that have their network cards registered with ITS. This allows the university to maintain control over the use or misuse of the campus network as required by the Board of Regents.

Please let us know if you have other questions about Library service.
