Question from GSU Faculty, Dec 13 2012
I did not see a procedure for reporting a missing book in your FAQ collection. The information from the on-line catalog indicates that it is not checked out, but it was not on the shelf when I looked for it. I also scanned the surrounding shelves. How do I report this?
Ann Hamilton responds: Thank you for your question. If you can't find a book, please report the problem at the circulation desk on second floor. If the book isn't located quickly, trained personnel will be assigned to do an extensive search for it.

Question from Anonymous, Dec 11 2012
Will the library consider putting up a Christmas tree? I love all the decorations across campus this time of year, but I spend most of my time in the library studying. A Christmas tree would look so lovely in the lobby area.
Ann Hamilton responds:  Thank you for your suggestion. The decorations on Sweetheart Circle and the campus Holiday Tree are provided by the University, and they are an important part of campus tradition. If the library were to purchase a tree and decorations, they would have to be paid for with money from our Foundation account. Much of that money has been raised to purchase books and resources for students and faculty. We are reluctant to approach donors to request donations for seasonal items like trees or decorations in light of the research needs of the campus community.

Question from Anonymous, Dec 05 2012
Hi I saw previous comments about people talking on the 4th (quiet) floors and I have yet to see a staff member walk around and I really feel you guys could do better with enforcing it because I really can't focus with noise
responds:

Thank you for your comments. I shared them with the head of the Access Services Department - the department responsible for insuring quiet floors are quiet. Here is his response:

We are sorry you experienced a noise problem in the Library.  We are proactive in patrolling for noisiness, but still it is difficult to completely monitor the whole building at all hours.  We would appreciate your help with this issue.  Any time you find a noise problem in a quiet area, we would be grateful if you would either report it to the Checkout Desk on the second floor in person, or go to a stairwell and call 478-5647 to report the problem, or use the phone by the elevator nearest the front of the building.

Thank you for your concern.

Question from Anonymous, Nov 29 2012
Is there anyway to enforce the quiet policy of the 3rd & 4th floor? I like to study in peace and quiet, but as of here lately, there are rude people who have loud conversations that can be heard throughout the entire floor. What can one do about this problem?
Ann Hamilton responds: Thank you for your question. During the evening hours, the library has an employee whose primary job responsibility is to walk around on fourth floor and the quiet side of third floor to remind users that those are quiet areas. You should see that person from time to in the evening. Please let her/him know about the problem you've observed.

There are several things you might do if the problem occurs at other times. You can go to the person(s) who is being noisy, and politely remind them they are in a quiet area and  ask that they move to a non-quiet area designed for group study. I work on third floor, and I do that farily often. Many people are not aware that some areas are designated quiet areas.  Another option is to go to the elevator closest to the main stairwell at the front of the building. There is a phone to the left of that elevator on third and fourth floors that can be used to report the problem to library employees on second floor. The other option is to go to second floor and report the problem at either service desk. Employees at the desk where books are checked out are the one who are primarily responsible for keeping quiet areas quiet.

Please let me know if you have other suggestions or comments.

Question from GSU Grad Student, Nov 02 2012
I have commented on this before. The grad study room I was in was not clean. Maybe the custodians should come in the AM when no one's in there. Also, in room 4219 the thermostat does not work. It is very cold in there!
Ann Hamilton responds:  Thank you for your comments. We'll report the comment about the cleanliness of the room to Custodial Services in Physical Plant. The primary time for cleaning the library is during the midnight to 7:00 am shift. The size of the custodial staff is much smaller during the day shift. In the future it would be helpful if you'd report a room that isn't clean to one of the service desks so that Custodial Services can be contacted.

We're in the process of reviewing temperatures within the building. The last report showed all temperatures to be between the 68 and 73 degrees expected from the system. The campus standard is 72 degrees, but we intentionally keep shelving areas a little lower to help preserve collections. My best suggestion is to wear layers year round and keep a sweater available at all times. That's what I do.

Question from GSU Grad Student, Oct 25 2012
I think the printing system should require students to tap or slide their eagle IDs. It is really easy for students to put in another students number and steal someone else's points.

Question from GSU Grad Student, Oct 18 2012
It's too cold to stay longer inside the library which is really not appreciable as long as quite sincere study is concerned.
Ann Hamilton responds: Thank you for your comment. Temperatures in public seating areas are maintained as near as possible to the campus standard of 72 degrees. A recent report showed that a few areas on fourth floor are colder than they should be. We're working with Physical Plant to raise temperatures in those areas. Shelving areas are kept at lower temperatures to help preserve print materials. Areas with multiple computers tend to be warmer than other areas. I suggest you move to an area as close to the outer edge of the building and as far away from shelving areas as possible or to an area near computers. My solution is to wear layers year round and always keep a sweater with me because I get cold very easily.

Question from GSU Grad Student, Oct 18 2012
Many of the computers have keys on the keyboard which do not work well. Many keyboards are very dirty due to years of use.
responds: Your suggestion was forwarded to David Lowder, head of the Systems Department. Here is his response:

Thank you for your suggestion.

There is a campus policy that we replace computers every four years using the Student Technology Fee. We replace the keyboards, mice and monitors at the same time. We hope to get funding to replace 96 computers this academic year.

We do replace damaged keyboards when we find them. If you find a keyboard that needs cleaning or replacing, please notify any Help Desk so it can be replaced.

Thank you for your suggestion. The floor plans are online, but we are in the process of making them more visible. For now, if you choose the “About Us” link on the left side of the library’s web page, there is a link on that page called "Directory of Library Services" that will take you to a page with floor plans for each floor.

The computer screen and keyboards are always so dirty and look like they have never been cleaned. Also google doc/power point was so slow in editing so I could only type one world per 10-20 seconds on slides.
Ann Hamilton responds:  Thank you for your suggestion.
The computer monitors and keyboards in the building are cleaned during slow periods each semester. If you find a computer in need of cleaning, please notify either of the help desks on the 2nd floor.
Problems with Google Docs could be either a problem with the computer or with the campus internet connection being slow. If you can let us know which computer was having the problem we can investigate.

Laptops have terrible internet connection. Caused me to lose my work 3 times and stay at the library an extra two hours longer than planned!
Ann Hamilton responds:  Thank you for your comment. At this point we're not sure if the problem is with the laptops or with the wireless network itself so we are running some tests on both.

The laptops we have are getting old. For each of the last two years we have requested newer ones from the Student Tech Fee committee but we have been turned down. Without that funding we are unable to replace them.

Question from Anonymous, Aug 27 2012
Please bring back the original option for printing. It is a complete mess for students to have something automatically print off b/c it slows the printer down and creates mass documents that you have to sift through in order to find yours. Unless someone has already taken your document and you have to print again. This new way of printing is a hassel and is not equipped for the mass amounts of students printing.
Ann Hamilton responds: Thank you for your suggestion. The large volume of printing the first week of classes, with so many students rushing to print materials needed for the start of classes, overwhelmed our print servers and they were constantly shutting down and disrupting all printing. Our plan is to put things back to normal Tuesday morning.

Why can't students listen to sound through the computers? Even through headphones it isn't accessible. I don't see any reason for there to be a block from this.
Ann Hamilton responds: Thank you for your suggestion. This is not something we are doing intentionally. It is a bug that occurs sometimes due to computer security settings required on campus. Because there is not a suggestions and comments section under parking and transportation.... There should be more parking spots available for students when they come to the library. GSU is growing fast! There should be more than 50 parking spots for 20,000 students and staff all using the same library.
Ann Hamilton responds: Thank you for your comments. Parking and Transportation Services is responsible for parking options for the entire campus. I will share your comments with them. Library employees who are not able to park in the lot behind the library usually park in the Lewis Hall parking lot. That lot is available to students at all times the library lots are available.

Question from GSU Student, Jun 22 2012
I have seen and heard many complaints about how cold the library is. If so many are bothered by it, why not bump the temperature up a little? I don't see any convenience in bringing extra clothes when you will have to strip them right back off the moment you walk outside.

Someone needs to tell the woman (. . .) at the check out desk not to wear such pungent perfume when working with the public. Many people have allergies to fragrances. I am in the library frequently. Question from Anonymous, May 06 2012
Every time I use EBSCO to find research articles I click the link for full text so I will only view articles that I have access to. However, what I find is a 'link to full text' which brings me to a publisher site with the option to purchase the article for over $50 on average. Why are these articles even placed on EBSCO if they cannot be accessed? Is this some type of marketing ploy? Whatever it is, it is exploitative and frustrating. If you cannot provide the article, don't list it. Period. Don't try to take more of our money that we do not have. It's bad enough our tuition is not covering the cost of the literature.
Ann Hamilton responds:  Thank you for your comments. The EBSCO service – like most electronic resources to which the library subscribes – is designed to meet the needs of a wide range of users. For example, most faculty and graduate students are searching for the maximum number of sources related to their specific research topic. EBSCO is designed to meet both their needs and those of anyone who is searching for only a few resources. If you only see references that link to commercial sources for your topic, please ask for assistance from one of the librarians at the Learning Commons Desk on second floor. They can help you find information on your topic that is available without charge.

Question from TwensQueen Jean-Baptiste, Apr 26 2012
Is there any way to make the library website easier to navigate? It is frustrating when I have a paper and I am looking for a book or different sources and this website gives me nothing, absolutely NOTHING! I understand that we can use the designated computers in front of the Reserve Desk, but not everyone can use them at the same time, and if I am at home, I would like to be able to find books and sources from the website. The library home screen is basically useless, and it is frustrating. Please fix this somehow. Thank you!
Ann Hamilton responds: Thank you for your comments. I shared them with David Lowder, Head of the Systems Department, and this was his response:

We are cooperating with Marketing and Communications on a new site design. We are planning to do usability testing this month with volunteer students. If you have any sample tasks that you have had trouble with, we would appreciate hearing about them so we could test them on our site. We often have our own ideas about how students and faculty use our site but that's often not what is needed.

Please let me know if you’d like to volunteer for the testing.

Question from Robert Beall, Apr 20 2012
It is ridiculous that I am taking an online class at GSU and I cannot listen to my lectures because they are in real audio and the school's computers do not have real player, and when I ask a library assistant, they tell me nothing can be installed on these computers. I feel like it is absurd that my student fees go to fund a library and computers that I cannot even use to complete an online class.
Ann Hamilton responds: Software on computers in the Library, like all labs on campus, is pushed down from a central server by the campus IT Services. We are told that so far they have had difficulty distributing Real Player this way. We have individually installed Real Player on a number of computers on the first floor and they should be labeled. We're sorry that the person you dealt with was not aware of this. We are distributing this information again to the Help Desk staff.

Question from Anonymous, Apr 11 2012
I was wondering is there any way that the 5th can be made for individual studying because I have frequently come into contact with people having group conversations not in a low tone on the floor which is really distracting! I would really appreciate if that could be monitored. Thank you. GSU student
Ann Hamilton responds:

Thank you for your question. The fourth floor and the Carroll Building side of the third floor are designated as quiet floors. Library employees are assigned to monitor those floors during certain times. If a group or individual is too noisy when you are studying in a designated quiet area, you have several options. You can remind the person(s) involved that the area is a quiet area, you can use the phone next to elevator B near the front of building to report the problem to a service desk, you can IM the information services desk, or you can go to second floor and report the problem at the circulation desk. Most library users respond positively to a courteous reminder that an area is designated as a quiet area and move to a non-quiet area.

Question from graduate student, Oct 12 2011
Students are denied the right to install software on computers even though the operating systems are virtual. Once again the IT Department has limited student privileges without valid reasoning. The computers don't have all the tools needed for school and I have my own software that I need for class. It removes when you log off it says.
Ann Hamilton responds:  Thank you for your comments.  The University's Information Technology Division is responsible for protecting campus technological resources from damage. As part of that responsibility, they carefully control what members of the campus community are allowed to put on computers owned by the university. If a class is expected to use software for assignments that is not available via a campus-wide license, the professor for the class can arrange to have that software installed for use by the class. For example, if a class needs to use such software on Library computers, the professor should contact the Library's Systems Department and explain what is needed. The Systems Department will then contact IT Services to arrange for the software to be installed on Library computers. Once the software is installed it will be available for use by all members of the class.

Question from Anonymous, Oct 06 2011
It is my observation that more tables/ chairs could used down in the atrium to help with the overflow from the cafe at lunchtime.
Ann Hamilton responds:  Thank you for your suggestion. The furniture in the first floor of the atrium was given to the library by Auxiliary Services when new furniture was purchased for Zach's Brews. The atrium is an emergency exit that is ciritical for the front of the building if rear exits are blocked in an emergency. Adding additional furniture might interfere with maintaining the area as an emergency exit. If there is an overflow from Zach's Brews, there are no restrictions on where food can be taken within in the library as long as liquids are not placed near computers or other equipment.

I had been writing my paper for my midterm for the better part of the day when i went over to listen to my friend give his speech. I came back and my computer had logged me out and i lost all of my paper. It would be nice if there were some kind of warning posted around the library warning students of this. Thank you very much!
Ann Hamilton responds:  Thank you for your comments. I shared them with David Lowder, Head of the Library's Systems Department, and he shared them with Steve Burrell, Vice President for Information Technology. The following response was provided by David Lowder:

The automatic logging out of computers is part of a campus-wide policy instituted in all labs by Information Technology Services, and we had anticipated that they would communicate the information to students at the beginning of the semester. In the Library we have a message as the background of each computer saying to save your work to a jump drive. Unfortunately that message has been replaced on several occasions by advertising placed by IT Services so you may not have seen it. We also have a few signs in the Learning Commons reminding students to log off of the computers when they leave but you're right, none of these explicitly state that the computers will automatically logoff and clear your work after 15 minutes of inactivity. While we don't have room for a lot of signs in the building, I think we can add that message to the ones we already have and to the background screens on the computers themselves.

Vice President Burrell added the following comments:

It is unwise to leave your login unattended, and it is important to frequently save work... especially when you walk away from it.

The morning clean up staff think it is appropriate to . . . A.) complain to fellow staffers about pay (loudly) B.) make loud personal calls on speaker phone C.) surf the Internet Is this what student fees pay for???
Ann Hamilton responds: Thank you for your comments. University employees who work a four hour shift are entitled to a fifteen minute break in the middle of that shift. Break time can be used for personal activities such as phone calls, computer use, or other similar activities.

Custodians who work in the library are employed by the Custodial Services unit within the University's Physical Plant Divsion. If you wish to comment on personnel who are employed in Custodial Services, please contact Mr. Alden Byrd, Custodial Superintendent, at abyrd@georgiasouthern.edu . A number of custodians work in the library during several different shifts. For comments to be useful they should be as detailed as possible. Question from Anonymous, Jun 30 2011
The printer is charging double to print. For example, if I print 2 pages and they are front to back why am I charged .20 instead of just .10 for one page?
Ann Hamilton responds: Thank you for your question. The most expensive part of the printing process is the ink. Printing two pages on a single piece of paper requires the same amount of ink as it would to print the two pages on two different sheets of paper. That is why the university's printing system "charges" for each page that is printed instead of each sheet of paper used.

Question from Anonymous, Jun 30 2011
Every time i come into the library a student is talking loudly on their phone, and the assistants don't say anything! Today, i young man was talking very loudly on this phone and cussing very loudly, so loudly you could hear him across the room! The lady sitting next to me asked him to please be quiet and i asked him to please go outside this was a library and i was trying to do work. He starting fussing at me and telling me to be quiet and to stay out of his conversation and that i was being rude! what i am so irate about is this young African American man was managing the info desk and didn't even have enough courage to say anything! we were sitting the 2nd row from him and he knew that the guy was talking and cussing very loudly on his phone! this is a library and their are young children that come here! This is unacceptable! I pay to go to school here and this is what i get. can we please take care of this, thank you.
Ann Hamilton responds: Thank you for your comments. If you feel that someone's behavior in the library is unacceptable, please report your concerns to a non-student employee at the nearest service desk. If for any reason you do not think that person's response is satisfactory, ask to speak to her/his supervisor. Henderson library has a long-standing tradition of offering both quiet and non-quiet areas to meet the varying needs of its patrons. The western side of third floor and all of fourth floor are designated as quiet floors while other floors are not. Although computers on quiet floors are only available in group study rooms, laptop computers may be checked out at the circulation desk for use anywhere in the building. If you prefer to do your work in a quiet area, please keep this information in mind.

Question from Anonymous, Jun 09 2011
I believe that the time has arrived that Henderson Library should consider restricting admission to students, faculty, and staff (perhaps some provision could be made for alumni and friends of the University). There are far too many disruptive children in here. Government documents could be stored where the family area is currently located (near the circulation desk); these would be open access to everyone. Frankly, I believe that the situation is about to get out of hand and needs to be addressed. Thank you for allowing me to make this suggestion.
Ann Hamilton responds: Thank you for your comments. As a state institution partially supported by Georgia tax payers, Georgia Southern and the library are open to the public. (See blue policy signs posted at both library entrances.) The library has policies in place requiring anyone under the age of sixteen be accompanied by a parent or another adult. If children are not causing a disruption, they are left alone. However, if children are causing a disruption, the situation should be reported to the circulation desk immediately. Library staff will deal with the problem and call Public Safety if necessary.

A campus policy requiring passwords to access all public campus computers will be implemented in fall 2011. The library will begin implementing the policy during the summer. Community users will be given passwords only allowing access to computers in the family area and near the information desk. That will keep community computer users within sight of library employees.

Question from Anonymous, Apr 25 2011
these BOYS are talking on the 4th floor. PLEASE come tell them to be quiet.
Ann Hamilton responds: Thank you for your comment. If you observe any kind of disruptive behavior in the library, please report it immediatly to the nearest public service desk on second floor. If you don't wish to go to second floor, you have other options. You can do that by IMing the librarian at the Information Desk. If you don't want to IM, you can go to elevator B - the one closest to the main stairwell at the front of the building. There is a call box next to that elevator that can be used for reporting problems.

To get to the library site, I go from mygasouthern to the GSU home page to current students to library. There has to be an easier way??
Ann Hamilton responds: Thank you for your comment. If you scroll to the bottom of the MyGeorgiaSouthern page, there is a link to the library in the list in the bottom right corner of the page. Clicking on that link will take you to the library's page.

Question from Crystal, Apr 20 2011
As a student, I find it rude for the janitorial staff to come out of the 3rd floor elevators laughing and carrying away. I can hear them coming up the elevator and they didn't even attempt to be quiet when the doors opened. It is very distracting and unprofessional.
Ann Hamilton responds: Thank you for your comments. I will share them with the Physical Plant personnel who supervise the custodians.

Question from Anonymous, Mar 22 2011
I think that there should be air freshener spray at the front desk for the study room for checkout.
Ann Hamilton responds: Thank you for your suggestion. We will share it with Custodial Services. If you want to use a study room and there is an offensive odor present in the room, please report the problem at the circulation desk on second floor. The employees there can contact Custodial Services to deal with the problem.

Question from Anonymous, Mar 07 2011
Is there any way that SAP can be loaded on to the computer? The CIT building closes at 3am but the library is open 24hrs. So it would be helpful for students like myself.
David Lowder responds: Thank you for your suggestion about adding SAP to the computers in the library.
We have contacted the College of Information Technology about the feasibility of adding our computers to their license agreement. They don't see any problems with it so we will be adding SAP to at least some of the library computers by the end of Spring Break. We will install it in the Learning Commons area first and, if there is time, we will add it to all of the computers on the second floor.

Question from Wayne L. Williams, Feb 17 2011
I really appreciate all your service and support, the library is always a clean and comfortable environment. However, today it is extremely cold because the A/C is on and we were wondering if there was a reason for this.
Ann Hamilton responds: Thank you for your kind words about the library.I'm responsible for the building, and I'm not aware of any special temperature adjustments made by Physical Plant. When external temperatures change, it takes some time for a building as large as the library to adjust to those changes. I dress in layers year round because I may be cold or hot when others are comfortable with the campus standard of 72 degrees .

Question from student, Feb 14 2011
I was unable to get on a computer today. Every one was taken, What upsets me is that three women and their 5 children where taking up a total of 7 computers,I am payiing tuition. students should have a priority. Your staff . . . . are not doing anything about it. Same goes for when the alarm soiunds and students with backpacks are leaving, no one is ever stopped. Well it's time you start earning your money instead of just surfing on the web and getting paid for it. It is your JOB to nake sure the computers are being used properly. Single mothers have it difficult I understand but their is alace specifically set aside for them. There kids DO NOT have priority on the computers, students do, we are the one spaying tution.
Ann Hamilton responds: Thank you for your comments. If you feel library policies are not being applied appropriately, please address your concern to a non-student employee at the nearest service desk. If you are not satisfied with that person's response, ask to speak to a supervisor. You are welcome to follow that process as far as you feel necessary. Please keep in mind that the libary has a number of laptops available for checkout for use throughout the building.

Question from , Jan 27 2011
Hi! I was wondering how to access JSTOR through our school. When I visit the JSTOR website itself, it says that I may need to login through my school, but I can't find this information anywhere on our library website. Can you please help me with this? Thank you so much!
Ann Hamilton responds:  Thank you for your question. If you want to search the archives of a particular journal, click the "Articles/Databases @ GALILEO" tab in the middle of the library's home page. Go to the "all databases" section at the bottom of that box, and click on the letter "J." Scroll down on the next screen until you reach the section with the JSTOR listings. Choose the appropriate subject area, and you'll be given a list of available journals. If you are looking for a specific article in a journal that may be in JSTOR, please ask one of the librarians in the Learning Commons on second floor to assist you, or submit your question via the "Ask a reference question" link on the library's "Contact Us" page.
