Marvin S. Pittman Research Collection

The Marvin S. Pittman Research Collection holds all Special Collections' available resources on the life and career of Marvin S. Pittman, with special focus on the 1941-43 Board of Regents controversy during which Dr. Pittman lost and regained his position as president of Georgia Teachers College. There are four sections in the collection:

Section 1 - The Works of Marvin S. Pittman: This section contains books and articles written by Dr. Pittman throughout his career in education. His focus was on rural education, both in the United States and abroad.

Section 2 - Works about Marvin S. Pittman: This section contains anything from biographical sketches and obituaries to scholarly works on Dr. Pittman's life and career.

Section 3 - The 1941 Controversy: This section contains all our available resources dealing with the 1941 Board of Regents controversy. This includes primary and secondary material on the controversy as well as biographical materials on other major players in the controversy, particularly Governor Eugene Talmadge.

Section 4 - Background Material:  This section contains resources gathered by Dr. Novotny concerning Georgia politics in general during the 1930's and 1940's.  It provides useful information about the political background against which the 1941 controversy occurred.
