The 1941 Controversy
This section contains Special Collections' resources concerning the 1941
Georgia Board of Regents controversy. Marvin S. Pittman, along with University
of Georgia Dean Walter S. Cocking, was one of the main targets of Governor
Eugene Talmadge's attempt to rid Georgia higher education of "foreign"
influences. Talmadge's actions led to national attention and criticism,
caused Georgia's white colleges and universities to lose accreditation
and contributed to his defeat in the 1942 gubernatorial election.
