The recently-inaugurated War on Terror has brought a renaissance of
patriotism to this country, much of it expressed in music and song.
Since Special Collections contains hundreds of examples of sheet music
from long ago, we decided to take a second look at vintage patriotic numbers
among them reaching back to the 1890's. Some remain very famous,
some were only locally famous, some were once very famous but are now forgotten.
In any case, we believe this brief look back gives some perspective on
what is permanent and what ephemeral in American patriotism.
