Upgrade

GALILEO is now 10 years old and is in the process of getting a makeover!  Phase I of the upgrade project is now complete with several exciting new features now available, and with more to come during the next year.

SFX – The long awaited link resolver, known as SFX for Special Effects, is now enabled in many GALILEO resources including all of the EBSCO databases and ProQuest.  SFX provides links between databases so that a search conducted in a database such as Academic Search Premier will provide a link to all available full text for that title in any SFX enabled database.  SFX also provides a link to both the local and union catalogs, generating an automatic search for print holdings.  Try a search in any of the EBSCO databases and look for the purple “Find It” button!

SFX EXAMPLE: A search in Academic Search Premier (EBSCOhost) for the topic “computer viruses” contains the following citation:

E-Sabotage Migrates to the Cell phone. By: Vascellaro, Jessica E.. Wall Street Journal - Eastern Edition, 11/7/2006, Vol. 248, Issue 109, 2p.

There is no full-text for this article in Academic Search Premier, but clicking on the “Find It” button below the citation, provides the user with a menu of options for obtaining full text, including a link to full text in ABI Inform as well as the opportunity to search the local and union catalog for print holdings.

CITATION LINKER – Powered by the link resolver, SFX, Citation Linker provides a fill in the blank form for retrieving full text articles from a citation.  The user simply fills in as much information as he or she has for a specific citation, and a menu appears showing full text options for the article.  Citation Linker also provides a link to both the local and union catalogs, generating an automatic search for print holdings.

ARTICLE LEVEL LINKS - Another feature of Citation Linker, of particular interest to faculty, is the ability to save a persistent URL for an article citation.  This means that faculty can provide deep links to individual articles within web pages, courseware, or other online applications, eliminating the need to host PDF files and the associated copyright complications.  This feature appears under the “More Options” button at the bottom of the menu of full text links.

FUTURE UPGRADES – More databases will eventually be included in the SFX Knowledge Base, allowing the link resolver to link even more articles.  Sometime in the next year, titles to which Georgia Southern subscribes directly will be included as well.  In addition, an upgrade will be made to the “Quick Search” feature which allows searching of several databases simultaneously.  Currently, all libraries with GALILEO are using a federated search program known as WebFeat for this type of searching.  During the next year, academic libraries will migrate to a program called MetaSearch which will be more powerful for the academic environment.
