Glossary of Terms
ARC – Automated Retrieval Collection for our less frequently used materials. Items are requested through the Library’s Catalog or in person at the Checkout Desk.
Ask a Librarian – Online chat, email or phone access to a Librarian to answer your questions.
ContentDM – CONTENTdm is the platform used by Special Collections to host and display selected digitized materials. Digital collections are searchable via the Web using standard Web browsers by an unlimited number of users. Digital Special Collections.
Digital Commons – Digital Commons@Georgia Southern is an open access digital collection whose purpose is to collect and disseminate the intellectual and creative output of the University’s faculty, staff and students. Contributions come from all over campus and include theses/dissertations, conference proceedings, research publications, brochures, and newsletters.
Digital Special Collections – Selected Special Collections items scanned and uploaded. Digital collections are searchable via the Web using standard Web browsers by an unlimited number of users. Users can also comment on, tag, and rate digital items; and also use an enhanced image viewer for zooming, panning, and viewing images in full screen.
Distance Learner – Distance Learners are currently enrolled Georgia Southern students who live more than 30 miles from Statesboro and don’t come to Statesboro for any classes this semester.
Discover@GeorgiaSouthern – Discover@Georgia Southern, launched Fall of 2012, is a single search option for all databases, the online catalog, Digital Library of Georgia, and more.
Document Delivery – This term means different things at different university libraries. At Georgia Southern’s Henderson Library, it refers to supplying articles from our print journals and checking out and mailing books from our collection to the user. Users who are eligible for this service are Faculty and Distance Learners.
EagleScholar – Georgia Southern University’s institutional repository. Replaced by Digital Commons@GeorgiaSouthern
EagleSource – Subject Guides to help with doing research. Replaced by LibGuides
eJournals – Journals available in Full Text online.
eReserves – Electronic Reserves. Professors may request that electronic copies of reserve materials are made available for their students.
Endnotes – An online or desktop tool for managing your research sources and citing your work. Paid for you by Georgia Southern University. You can download the desktop version from your MyGeorgiaSouthern account.
eReserves – Electronic Course Reserves. Faculty can have the Library staff scan articles or other documents and make them available to students over the web. Your MyGeorgiaSouthern username and password provide access.
FindIt@GeorgiaSouthern – Provides direct links from a database citation to the full text of the article (if available) and other helpful options.
Interlibrary Loan (ILLIAD) – Interlibrary Loan is an international agreement and service between all types of libraries, whereby a library can borrow an item or get a photocopy from a journal that it doesn’t own. ILLIAD is the online system used to request items.
GALILEO – GALILEO stands for GeorgiA LIbrary LEarning Online, an initiative of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. GALILEO is an online library portal to authoritative, subscription-only information that isn’t available through free search engines or Web directories. Participating institutions may access over 100 databases indexing thousands of periodicals and scholarly journals. Over 10,000 journal titles are provided in full-text. Other resources include encyclopedias, business directories, and government publications.
GIL – GALILEO Interconnected Libraries, or GIL, is an extension of the GALILEO initiative funded by the Governor and the General Assembly of the state of Georgia to enhance and expand educational opportunities for the citizens of Georgia. GIL has integrated into one system a web-based online Universal Catalog of all the book collections of the University System, a Circulation System with self-service options, Fund Accounting, Cataloging, and check-in and control functions. USG patrons are able to initiate requests for books – GIL Express – directly from other libraries at their computers from home, from dorm rooms, or within the libraries.
GIL Express – GIL Express is a service being offered at all libraries within the University System of Georgia (USG). The service is an innovative resource sharing initiative that allows students, faculty and staff access to all eligible circulating material at all USG libraries. GIL Express is available to all eligible patrons through both an on site (walk up) requesting service and a remote requesting service.
GIL Universal Catalog – The GIL Universal Catalog is a single database of information created from the library collections of the University System of Georgia’s 31 institutions, and the Georgia Archives (State of Georgia). These individual collections contain more than 14 million volumes, of which approximately 60% are unique, i.e. only held by one library.
Libguides – Subject Guides to help with doing research. Replaces EagleSource.
Library Liaisons – librarians who provide integrated services for faculty, staff, and students in all disciplines. They can help you plan a strategy to efficiently and effectively accomplish your search for information, or answer questions about the library’s resources, services, and policies.
PIN – Personal Identification Number needed to access your GIL account so that you may order items via GIL Express and request items from the ARC. Contact the Checkout Desk at (912) 478-5647 if you need assistance with your PIN.
RefWorks – An online tool for managing your research sources and citing your work. Paid for you by Georgia Southern University.
Reserves – Professors may put books, articles, videos, etc. on Reserve for their students to use online.
