The Collection and Resource Services Department in the Zach S. Henderson Library invites nominations and applications for the position of Catalog/Metadata Librarian.  Georgia Southern University (www.georgiasouthern.edu), a member institution of the University System of Georgia and a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University, is one of Georgia’s premier universities. Within this setting, the Zach S. Henderson Library’s mission is to support the University by proving access to information, collections, and services designed to meet the scholarly needs of the University.  In addition, the Library promotes independent lifelong learning, employs a learner-centered service ethic, and ensures a comfortable and secure study environment.  The Catalog/Metadata Librarian plays a pivotal role in the library’s mission, working in a collaborative team environment to facilitate discovery and access to library collections, information, and knowledge for the student, researcher and scholar alike.

Position Description: Reports to the Coordinator of Cataloging & Metadata. The Catalog/ Metadata Librarian serves as a member of the Cataloging & Metadata Team to provide, maintain, and enhance metadata for digital materials as well as perform cataloging for library materials in print and electronic formats.  The Catalog/Metadata Librarian works with special collections materials to prepare them for digitization and to organize the collection into a digital collection management system for access and discovery.  Some reference assistance for special collections is required as well as ongoing assessment of workflows and access and discovery functionality. The Catalog/Metadata librarian supervises one full-time staff member and possibly student assistants.

The position is a 12-month tenure track faculty appointment at the level of assistant professor. Entry level salary is $40,000 and is negotiable depending upon qualifications and experience.  In accordance with University System of Georgia requirements for promotion and tenure, all library faculty must achieve the following: superior professional performance, demonstrating excellence in librarianship; outstanding service to the institution, profession, and/or the community; outstanding research, scholarship, creative activity or academic achievement; professional growth and development.

Required Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS as of July 1, 2012
  • Experience, training or coursework in cataloging
  • Knowledge of MARC, AACR2, LCSH, LC Classification
  • Knowledge of non-MARC metadata schemes
  • Knowledge of digitization principles and practices
  • Excellent oral, written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects and priorities
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with colleagues
  • Knowledge of major trends in cataloging, metadata schemes, resource discovery/access, digital library collections
  • Interest in and potential for meeting established promotion and tenure criteria

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in an academic library
  • Knowledge of special collections
  • Experience in traditional cataloging or metadata creation
  • Experience using OCLC and integrated library systems (Voyager preferred)
  • Knowledge of digital collection management systems such as DSpace
  • Supervisory experience in a library setting
