Bindery Books
Books returning from the bindery should only be routed to the Resource
Management unit if the title has not been cataloged. Rebinds in need of
barcode replacement should be routed to the processor in the Serials
Control
unit.
Book jackets
Book jackets should be removed from all books except Browsing and
Special Collections books.
Items provided by the Student
Technology Fee
Materials provided by the Student Technology Fee must have restricted
circulation. They should arrive in Resource Management with a Reserve
flag. If no flag is provided, we will flag the item Reserve.
Collection Development should have these items before we catalog them.
They will follow their normal procedure for receiving gifts in the
selection
of a bibliographic record and creation of holding and item records.
The items will be sorted to catalogers following the guidelines in
Sorting Trucks below.
Lorimer Reading Room Books (sorting)
- Lorimer Reading room books will come to Resource Management on a
separate truck from other materials. They will have teal blue slips in
them.
The slips should stay in them throughout our process.
- These trucks will not be reviewed for reference material.
- The books should be sorted for cataloging by the designated LA
III. We will follow the established guidelines for sorting. Any book
jackets
remaining on the books at this point should stay on the book.
Collection
Development will have already removed all of the jackets that should be
tossed.
- Retain the truck that the books came off of and place it beside
our normal truck with the sign LORIMER BOOKS on it.
Theses
Theses are sorted to the Catalog Librarian when they arrive. Copy 1 is
sent to Special Collections primarily for security reasons. (If the
stacks
copy goes missing before we received the Special Collections copy, it
renders
our collection incomplete until another complete cycle of ordering and
binding. If the first copy is in Special Collections, it is then
accessible for in house use or copying, and is less subject to being
unavailable (checked
out or stolen) during the time in which we have only one copy.) Copy 2
is
sent to the ARC.
Sorting Trucks
New books come to us for cataloging after they are “checked-in.” These
trucks are reviewed by an Information Services librarian to identify
reference
titles. They are then sorted according to categories and placed in work
areas.
Trucks that are “Barcoded ready for Cataloging” will be screened by an
Information Services Librarian for selection of Reference material. The
books are then sorted into three categories. Use the 040 line on the
bibliographic
printout to determine where the books will go.
DLC: these are routed to an LA III.
Non-DLC (anything other than DLC) with a call number in the 050 or 090
line: these are divided between an LA III and the monographic
Catalog
Librarian depending on workload at the time. Some are placed on the
shelves
behind the LA III’s desk; others are placed on the Catalog Librarian's
shelves.
Non-DLC (anything other than DLC) without a call number in the 050 or
090 line: these are the Catalog Librarian’s and are placed on the
shelves beside his office door.
Videos and other media materials are sorted to the Catalog Librarian’s
shelf for cataloging.
