Marking cataloged material

Books

Collection Development and Serials Management apply a barcode to each monographic item sent over for cataloging. This barcode is placed on the top center of the inside back cover of each item as long as it doesn't interfere with information crucial to the use of the material. If the inside back cover is printed, the barcode will be placed on the first blank page available. We may request a page tipped in for the barcode if there is no space for it.

Barcodes for Browsing collection material will be placed on the top center of the page facing the inside back cover. Many Browsing titles retain their book jacket when they are sent to the shelf and this covers the inside back cover. Other material may have the barcode placed on the page facing the back inside cover.

Resource Management is responsible for writing the call number in the back of the book when monographic items are cataloged or added to the collection. The call number should be copied from the bibliographic call number field and written on the same page as the barcode to the left of the barcode.

Material inserted in pockets

Each supplemental piece inserted into a pocket in a cataloged item should have the call number for the item written on it. Record the call number in the upper left corner on the front of the supplemental piece unless this interferes with the use of information.

Alternate placement for  recording the call number on supplemental pieces when text is in the upper left corner will be decided on a case-by-case basis.

Cassettes

The Processor will scan the barcode and write the call number information on the cassette and label the container. The Catalog Librarian removes the barcode from the bibliographic printout and places it on the top center of the back of the outside of the container. The idea is to avoid covering the cassette cover label when possible.

CDs

The Processor will scan the barcode and write the call number information on the CD and label the container. The Catalog Librarian removes the barcode from the bibliographic printout and places it on the bottom front of the container. The idea is to avoid covering the CD cover label when possible.

DVDs

The Processor will scan the barcode and write the call number information on the DVD and label the container. The Catalog Librarian removes the barcode from the bibliographic printout and places it inside the container centered above the DVD. The placement is much like standard placement in a book.

Videocassettes

The Processor will scan the barcode and label the container. The Catalog Librarian removes the barcode from the bibliographic printout and places it near the top center of the manufacturers label on the top of the videocassette. The idea is to avoid covering critical information on the videocassette label when possible.

Flags

Routing and special handling flags may be placed in an item at any point in the workflow. Collection Development and Serials Management flag most of our material for handling as their records indicate. If an item lacks a necessary flag when it arrives in Resource Management, we may obtain the flag from the cabinet in the Serials Management office.

Flags placed in an item should remain in the item until it reaches the Processor.
