042 (Authentication code)

Do not retain for monographs

049 (Local holdings)

Prefixes in the 049 field of a bibliographic record should reflect information for the location of the circulating copy of the title cataloged. When selecting an 049 field prefix for a title with multiple copies in multiple locations, assign a single prefix based on the most accessible circulating copy.

Please use the following guidelines for data entry:

Stacks material- no prefix required

AV material- [CASSETTE], [CD], [VIDEO], [DVD], etc. as appropriate
Browsing material- no prefix required unless oversize
Lorimer Reading Room material- [LORIMER], [LORIMER][OVERSIZE]
MAA material- [MAA]
Oversize material- [OVERSIZE]
Reference material- [REF]
Special Collections material- [SPEC][COLL]

When the Catalog Librarian reviewed some of our documentation for Voyager testing, he noticed that there was a practice of placing a space between prefixes and GPMM in the 049 field. He says that the standard way of entering this data is without a space.

Examples:   [REF]GPMM
                  [OVERSIZE]GPMM
                  [MAA]GPMM
