US Docs Analyzed Sets
Analyzed sets with non-consecutive enumeration
Series such as the USDA Agriculture Handbook (A 1.76) may include sets that
have been enumerated as they were published in the series as a whole. The
multiple volume set that results is not numbered consecutively. We will not
use the same policy for cataloging these as for non-consecutive (etc.) sets
in the regular collection. The Government Documents collection relies so
heavily on searching by SuDoc number for accessibity that we must preserve
the Call Number search as the primary access point for this material.
Selecting bibliographic records for these titles:
- Choose individual bibliographic records that include the unique subtitle
in the 245 field when available in OCLC
- Choose a multiple volume bibliographic record with a detailed 505 field
only in the absence of quality individual records.
Editing bibliographic records for these titles:
- Call numbers (086 field) on the multiple volume bibliographic record
will follow the format of entering the first volume in the set followed by
"etc."
- Example: A 1.76:457, etc.
- Series tracing entries for all bibliographic records in the set will
include the number of the first volume of the title in the 440 or 490 and
830 field, $v. The volume number for multiple- volume bibliographic records
will be followed by ", etc."
- Example: Agriculture handbook (United States. Dept. of Agriculture);
$v no. 457, etc.
Creating holding records for the volumes:
- Each volume should have its own MFHD which includes its individual
SuDoc number whether the bibliographic record chosen is single piece or multiple
volume.
