Disability Rights Section Homepage
The primary goal of the Disability Rights Section is to achieve equal
opportunity for people with disabilities in the United States by implementing
the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Through its multi-faceted approach
toward achieving compliance with the ADA, this Section works to make this
goal a reality. The Section's enforcement, certification, regulatory, coordination,
and technical assistance activities, required by the ADA, combined with
an innovative mediation program and a technical assistance grant program,
provide a cost-effective and dynamic approach for carrying out the ADA's
mandates. The Section also carries out responsibilities under Sections 504
and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Small Business Regulatory Enforcement
Fairness Act, and Executive Order 12250.
Southern Poverty
Law Center
The Center began as a small civil rights law firm in 1971. Now it is
internationally known for its tolerance education programs, its legal
victories against white supremacist groups, its tracking of hate groups
and its sponsorship of the Civil Rights Memorial. Located in Montgomery,
Alabama -- the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement -- the Center was
founded by Morris Dees and Joe Levin, two local lawyers who shared a commitment
to racial equality. Its first president was civil rights activist Julian
Bond, who continues his involvement in the Center's work today as President
Emeritus.
U.S. Commission on Civil
Rights
The United States Commission on Civil Rights (Commission) is an independent,
bipartisan, fact-finding agency of the executive branch established under
the Civil Rights Act of 1957. The Commission has the following mandate:
Investigate complaints alleging that citizens are being deprived of their
right to vote; Study and collect information relating to discrimination
or a denial of equal protection of the laws under the Constitution; Appraise
Federal laws and policies with respect to discrimination or denial of equal
protection of the laws; Serve as a national clearinghouse for information
in respect to discrimination or denial of equal protection of the laws;
Submit reports, findings, and recommendations to the President and Congress;
Issue public service announcements to discourage discrimination or denial
of equal protection of the laws.
U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity
Commission
With its headquarters in Washington, D.C., and through the operations
of 50 field offices nationwide, the EEOC coordinates all federal equal employment
opportunity regulations, practices, and policies. The Commission interprets
employment discrimination laws, monitors the federal sector employment
discrimination program, provides funding and support to state and local
Fair Employment Practices Agencies (FEPAs), and sponsors outreach and technical
assistance programs.
