Georgia Southern University's Zach S. Henderson Library has helped to establish a new Web site aimed at facilitating consumer access to online health care information. The Coalition of Regional and Academic Libraries (CORAL) unveiled its Health Education Network on October15 at Statesboro Regional Library. The result of a partnership between the Henderson Library, the Magnolia Coastlands Area Health Education Center and Statesboro Regional Library, the Web site provides Internet users with links to pertinent and easily understandable health care data. The site - which can be viewed at www2.georgiasouthern.edu/library/coralhen/ -- attempts to save consumers time and trouble by featuring only links that have been selected by CORAL. The selection process is designed to avoid sites which are unreliable, out of date, or filled with medical terminology not aimed at the layperson. The project was funded by a Library Services and Technology Act grant. The Henderson Library assisted with the selection of web sites and resources, hosts the Web site, and contributed to the site's design and support.
A carillon recital by Dr. Michael Braz, professor of music at Georgia Southern, was recorded this past summer and is now available on compact disc for $15 from Henderson Library. The CD was sponsored by the Friends of Zach S. Henderson Library and proceeds go toward the purchase of materials for the Library's collections. Dr. Braz's 53 minute program is intended to take the listener musically through one academic year, with the beginning of the fall semester heralded by the Alma Mater and an exploration by newcomers of what the university has to offer, represented by Moussorgsky's Promenade. The term proceeds with some selections that Dr. Braz had programmed during his Tuesday/Thursday 15 minute "After Noon" carillon recitals, including his own composition inspired by the creek that runs near the football practice fields. Fall semester comes to an end with holiday tunes and a celebration of the new year. The recital continues through spring semester, tax season (Solace), final exams (Evening Prayer), and culminates with graduation and the traditional college tune Gaudeamus Igitur. To purchase the compact disc, visit the Circulation Desk or call 681-5647 ( click here for more details). See our weekly schedule of Carillon Mini-concerts.
Henderson Library has begun loading records into our catalog for about 14,000 electronic books from netLibrary that were purchased by GALILEO. To see a sample, run a "keyword anywhere" search in the Voyager online catalog for "netlibrary." The netLibrary electronic books are full text and graphics versions of published books. They may be checked out by individuals for up to two hours at a time. We share these books with all the libraries in Georgia, and because the netLibrary system permits only one person at a time to check out an eBook you may occasionally discover that the title you find in our catalog is already in use by someone else. The netLibrary electronic books collection includes both copyright-free and copyright-protected published materials, such as reference books, scholarly monographs, publications of many University Presses, and consumer books that have been converted into digital format. It is possible to perform full-text searches of a single eBook, search thousands of volumes simultaneously, browse topic categories, or read eBooks directly online. Other search options are available as well (subject, publisher, title, author, etc.). The eBooks may be borrowed (checked out) for onscreen viewing or by downloading to a user's computer for two hours. Users of Macintosh computers may check out eBooks only for onscreen viewing. It is not possible to download files from netLibrary to Macintosh computers. Each individual user must create a personal user name and password in order to check out eBooks. Do this using your office or another computer on campus since that will ensure proper Georiga Southern University IP-validation. If you establish an account using a computer that is NOT IP-validated, you will only be able to access the free, public domain ebooks, and NOT the recent, copyrighted books. After you create your account on campus, you will be able to also log in from home using the same account and get access to the eBooks purchased by GALILEO. To create an account, follow the link from one of the netLibrary books in our catalog or get to netLibrary in GALILEO and follow the on screen instructions.
The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia Advanced Learning Technologies and Library Services announce the availability of the Online Library Learning Center (OLLC). The OLLC is a stand-alone, web-based resource created to provide students taking courses at a distance with access to instructional information about using a range of online library resources and services. Intended to serve as a System-wide resource, OLLC is accessible to all library patrons supported by GALILEO and GIL services. The OLLC's ten-unit format is flexible. It provides information on a wide range of topics and is designed to serve as a self-paced tutorial or just-in-time learning resource. The OLLC begins with a basic introduction to research; subsequent units focus on the organization of library and information resources. The OLLC also includes a glossary of terms. Faculty can assign sections of the tutorial to supplement course materials or avail themselves of the assignments already incorporated within the resource. Individual unit topics are as follows:
The Online Library Learning Center is a collaboration among the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia's Advanced Learning Technologies, Library Services, and the Regents Academic Committee on Libraries (RACL). Their combined efforts have produced one of the most inclusive and effective library instructional tools available on the Web. The Online Library Learning Center is located at www.usg.edu/galileo/skills/, or can be accessed through the GALILEO home page in the "About GALILEO/Resources for GALILEO Users" section. |
