Georgia Southern Professor
Makes $11,000 Donation
Dr.
Sandra Peacock, Chair and Associate Professor of the History
Department, has a reference set of books valued at $11,000 to
the University Foundation for use by the Zach Henderson Library.
The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, a 61-volume
set described by the London Times as the "the
publishing event of 2004," has 60,000 pages containing
50,000 biographies of notable figures in British history, and
60 million words.
"I first used the DNB when I was a graduate student starting
to work on my doctoral dissertation," said Peacock. Her
advisor had suggested she consider writing a biography of a
19th century woman scholar named Jane Ellen Harrison. "The
DNB was the first place I looked for information." Henderson
Library Dean Bede Mitchell thanked Peacock for her generosity.
"This is a remarkably valuable resource for anyone interested
in British history."
The DNB is shelved in the reference section and is available
for consultation by Georgia Southern students, faculty or other
Henderson Library patrons.
Branan Foundation Gives to Patrons With
Disabilities Study Room
The
Mary Allen Lindsey Branan Foundation has given $15,000 to the
Georgia Southern University Foundation to benefit a study room
in the renovated Henderson Library for patrons with disabilities.
The gift will enable us to offer sophisticated learning-assistance
equipment and furnishings suitable for wheelchair users.

Bulloch County Material in Special Collections
Most of Henderson's Friends
are residents of Bulloch County and may be interested in accessing
- or contributing to - our holdings in the culture and history
of this county. We do not compete with the Statesboro
Regional Library in local genealogical volumes, but we are
proud of what we do possess. The 10 boxes of the Bulloch
County Historical Society which are deposited here contain documents,
photographs, letterboxes of local businesses, and papers of the
Anderson and Rushing families. It is a varied and extensive
collection reaching back to the Civil War. One small item,
for example, is the loyalty oath signed by Confederate soldier
Jesse Metts in 1865. Documents include letters, shares of
stock, plats, deeds, fi fas, and even long-outdated IOU's.
Other organizations represented among our collections are the
American Legion (for World War I), the Board of Education, the
Community Relations Council (of the Civil Rights Era), the Daughters
of the American Revolution, and the Retired Teachers Association.
Prominent people whose papers reside in Special Collections include
Smith C. Banks, Leodel Coleman (for World War II), Ida Mae and
Bertha Hagin, Shields Kenan, Dr. Kemp Mabry and Commander William
M. Rigdon. Business records include those for the old F.N. Carter
Store in Portal (site of the Turpentine Festival) and the 118
ledgers of the E.A. Smith Grain Company from 1912-1960. We have
the research materials for a sociological study of Statesboro
done by a University of Chicago scholar in 1954, as well as the
only known copy of the local Populist newspaper The Silver Dollar
(1896). In short, Henderson Library has original material which
would be of interest to anyone interested in Bulloch County. Online
access is available at http://library.georgiasouthern.edu/specialcollections/main.html
