In an effort to help faculty keep up with new publications in their field, Henderson Library recommends the following services:

ingenta supplies access to articles in more than 26,000 journals including over 5,400 online publications. Its online search service is enhanced by Zach S. Henderson Library providing a gateway for Georgia Southern University faculty that offers the following two automatic alert services at http://www.gateway.ingenta.com/gasou.

Up to 25 "Fax/Ariel Search Alerts" - you choose authors or keywords - the searches can be simple or complex

Up to 50 "Fax/Ariel TOC Alerts" (Table of Contents) - you choose publication titles

From the library's homepage choose "databases" and then scroll down the alphabetical list and click on "ingenta." Choose "sign up." Be sure to include your Georgia Southern e-mail address - that's how they know you are entitled to this service. Once you've signed up, choose "manage profile" and then "my fax/ariel search alerts" or "my fax/ariel TOC alerts" and follow the directions.

Each week, you will be e-mailed both citations to articles newly cited in ingenta that match your searches and tables of contents for newly received issues of the publications you have chosen. You may request the articles from ingenta - at YOUR expense, or use the links that are on the left of the page to either: - see if the journal is held by Henderson Library or is in a full-image database available from the library's homepage, or, - request the article through the library's interlibrary loan service.

For assistance contact Cynthia Frost in the library at 681-5405 or call the Reference Desk at 681-5645.

Current Contents - Available through GALILEO, Current Contents also provides access to the tables of contents of thousands of scholarly journals, including many not found in ingenta. However, Current Contents does not offer an e-mail alert service at this time.

As you discover new journal articles of interest, keep in mind our Interlibrary Loan office provides free copies of articles held by libraries throughout the United States. Most of our requests are filled within the state of Georgia and are available within a week of the request. You may place interlibrary loan requests for journal articles or books online at http://library.georgiasouthern.edu/forms/illchoice.html.

2003-2004+ Library Construction Plans

The expansion and renovation of the Henderson Library may begin as early as November or December 2003. The first step will involve the removal of asbestos from the east side of all four floors of the Library. The demolition of the Blue Building is also included in the Library project. The project will take place in two phases. The first step in Phase I - actual construction of the three story addition on the east side of the existing building - is currently scheduled to begin in January 2004 or later that year. In the second phase there will be a small addition on the west side of the building and a complete renovation of the existing building.

At some point in the early stages of the project, a construction fence will be installed around the site. The major impact of that fence will be to reduce the size of the parking lot behind the Library from more than 250 spaces to approximately 87 spaces. That fence is projected to be in place throughout the project which is currently estimated to be completed in 2007.

During Phase I, access to the Library will be via the western half of the front steps and the western side of the porch. Every effort will be made to maintain Library services at the highest level possible. The 24-hour schedule will be maintained as space and budget permit. Half of the faculty carrels and the large classroom on fourth floor will be demolished. As a result, the Library can no longer offer service in those areas. The Collection and Resource Services Department and Special Collections will be relocated to other places on campus for the duration of construction. Specific information about their locations will be provided when available.

Many project details are still being addressed. The campus community will be kept informed as much as possible as plans progress. Building information will continue to be updated on the Library's web page under Building plans on the drop-down menu. A model of the expanded/renovated building is on display in the lobby and a PowerPoint presentation showing building plans is showing in the same area.

If you have any questions or concerns about the expansion/renovation project, please do not hesitate to contact Ann Hamilton, Associate Dean of the Library and Associate University Librarian, at 681-5115 or ahamilton@georgiasouthern.edu.
