Automated Retrieval Collection
(ARC) Photos

An Automated Retrieval Collection (ARC) is now being used to store part of the Library's collections.

When the Library has been completely renovated, older, low-use materials will be placed in the Automated Retrieval Collection system. These pictures show examples of how such a system works. Some of the advantages to such a system include:

1. Because a large majority of high use collections will be in conventional shelving, patrons will find access to information more convenient.
2. Response time and delivery for items located in the ARC will be in minutes.
3. A high density ARC structure is very space efficient.
4. Existing and expanded library space can be configured as "flexible space" for students.
5. The amount of student seating can be increased.

Special note: In the 1994 earthquake at California State University, Northridge, the books in the ARC remained safe, while the materials in conventional shelving were scattered all over the place.
