Military Appreciation Month

May is Military Appreciation Month, and the Government Documents department has created a new exhibit in the atrium in celebration of Armed Forces Day/Week and Memorial Day to honor those in the military. Please take a look the next time you pass through. Special thanks to Tyler Sidders, Documents student assistant, for creatively honoring our service men and women, past and present!
In the United States, Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the 3rd Saturday in May [May 15th this year].Armed Forces Week begins on the second Saturday of May and ends on the third Sunday of May [May 8th – May 16th, 2010]. Since 1949, Armed Forces Week has celebrated Americans serving in the five U.S. military branches – the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard – following the consolidation of the military services in the Department of Defense.  Armed Forces Day is typically celebrated by parades, open houses, receptions and air shows.(http://www.defense.gov/afd/military/history.html )
