"Eagle vs. Turkey Sketch"
April 18, 3p.m.
Center for Wildlife Education's outdoor arena

Following the regular flight show, there will be a story for little ones about the “birdly” character of the Turkey and the Eagle who became candidates (so the myth goes) for the title of our national symbol. Special guests will be Director of the Wildlife Education Center, Steve Hein and “Freedom” our Georgia Southern mascot plus a spine tingling, sing-a-long ending featuring Dr. Richard Flynn and his guitar. For all ages.

Ben's Splash Bash

Georgia Southern's Recreation Activities Center (RAC)

Swimming Instructors from the campus Recreation Activities Center (RAC) will offer a free swimming lesson at the indoor pool to children ages 7 to 10 to honor Ben Franklin’s favorite sport. Parents must accompany children. Requires pre-registering. Register with JoEllen Broome at jbroome@georgiasouthern.edu or 912-687-2783. Please indicate whether your child is a beginning, intermediate or advanced swimmer when registering. Maximum of 50 children.

A free lecture for the public given by Dr. Donald J. Armel, a Graphic Communications Management Professor in the College of Arts and Sciences (CLASS) at Georgia Southern.  Dr. Donald  Armel, will present an overview of major breakthroughs in the printing industry with an emphasis on the early and important contributions of Ben Franklin to printing. This lecture will complete the Wednesday series of three talks related to the Ben Franklin travelling exhibit.

The Physics of Electricity

A free lecture for the public given by Dr. Mark A. Edwards, Chair of the Physics Department in the College of Science and Technology (COST) at Georgia Southern. Dr. Edwards will discuss the Physics of Electricity and the debt owed to Benjamin Franklin who is associated with the beginning of the understanding of electromagnetic phenomena.

Benjamin Franklin & Social Entrepreneurship
March 25, 7p.m.
College of Business Administration, Room 1124

A free lecture for the public given by Dr. John H. Brown, Acting Director of the School of Economic Development in the College of Business Administration (COBA) at Georgia Southern. Dr. Brown will discuss Franklin’s role as a precursor to social entrepreneurship, the practice of applying business skills to the solution of societal needs. He will further address his impact on the insurance industry which he in essence, founded and his influence on current day public philanthropists.

Kite-Making Workshop
March 21, 10a.m.
Statesboro Regional Public Library**

Middle school and high school students are invited to attend. If weather and wind permit, a kite flying exercise out in a cordoned off area of the public library grounds will complete the workshop. Materials will be provided free of charge by the Statesboro Regional Public Library, but pre-registration is required.

Having Fun with Science
March 17, 9:30-11:30a.m.

College of Education Auditorium

Two Georgia Southern Chemistry Professors who are also husband and wife, Drs. Jessica and Jeff Orvis will perform scientific experiments to dazzle and enlighten youngsters about the joys and wonders of scientific experiments to honor the great pastime of Dr. Benjamin Franklin. (This event is booked with close to 400 4th graders from Bulloch County schools attending.)


Opening Reception - Benjamin Franklin - In Search Of A Better World
March 14, 7p.m.
Zach S. Henderson Library (the exhibit is located on the 1st floor)

Principal Speaker for the evening: Dr. Johnathan O’Neill, Professor of History at Georgia Southern. As a Constitutional Historian, he will discuss crucial points about Ben Franklin’s diplomacy that won over France to the Revolutionary cause and his effective political manuvering during the Constitutional Convention of 1787. Moreover, he will refer to Franklin’s realization that his country was entering a new age of modern pluralist-democratic politics and individualism. Finally, he will reference the new re-examination of Franklin undertaken by historians Gordon Wood and Edmund Morgan.

Special Guests: Mrs. Clare Ellis, a descendant of Benjamin Franklin, who lives in Savannah, Georgia, her family, and a surprise addition that she will bring to our exhibit.
