Retrieving Books from the "ARC"
and what is the ARC anyway?

As the completion date for the Library Addition draws nearer, the Library faculty and staff are busy moving materials to what will be their homes for the next two years. Since there isn’t room in the addition for the entire book collection to be housed on standard library shelving, much of it will be kept in the Automated Retrieval Collection, or ARC.

Should you identify a book in our catalog which is so designated, you can have it retrieved for you in two ways.

The first way is to make an online request from the catalog record for the book. This can be done from your home or office as well as from inside the Henderson Library.

  1. After identifying a book in the catalog, click “Request” at the top of the screen.
  2. Enter your Eagle ID number and name as instructed.
  3. Under “Type of request,” select Automated Retrieval Collection.

After successfully making the request, the ARC retrieval machinery will automatically find the bin containing the book and a Circulation Desk staff member will bring it back to the Circulation Desk. The whole process only takes a few minutes in most instances. If you make the request from home or office, it will be held at the Circ Desk for you for a week. When you come to get it, it would be helpful if you would tell Library staff that you have requested it from the ARC.

The other method is simply to ask a Circulation staff person to make the request for you. Should you not find the book to your liking, the staff member will be glad to return it to the ARC.
