HENDERSON LIBRARY ANNOUNCES NEW SERVICE FOR FACULTY

Henderson Library is pleased to announce that it has obtained a site license for UnCover Reveal, a current awareness service that will e-mail directly to faculty members the tables of contents of the latest issues of up to 50 scholarly periodicals. In addition, as many as 25 keyword searches may be specified and run automatically against the UnCover database on a weekly basis. The results of these keyword searches are also e-mailed to the faculty member. UnCover's database includes more than 18,000 periodical titles from which to choose.

There is no cost to faculty members for this service. Articles which are identified as desirable through this service may be ordered for fax delivery at the faculty member's expense, or Henderson Library will assist in determining which of several free access avenues could be followed: the article may be available in a traditional printed periodical to which the Library subscribes, it may be available for downloading from GALILEO, or it may be obtainable quickly through interlibrary loan.

Instructions for registering for UnCover Reveal: Point your web browser to the UnCover Reveal URL http://uncweb.carl.org:80/reveal/. Click on the option for new Reveal users and follow the registration instructions. The minimum information you must complete is name, e-mail address, and a password of your choice. Other information is only necessary if you choose to order and pay for articles to be faxed to you. Be sure to note the Profile Number assigned to you.

Once you complete registering, you will need to wait at least 24 hours while UnCover validates your Profile. After you have waited 24 hours, return to Reveal's web site and follow the instructions above except when you get to the screen that offers you a chance to create a new profile, click on the "I Have a Profile" graphic. At the next screen, log in with your Profile Number and Password. Click on the "Enter" box. You will be sent to the Main Reveal Screen. UnCover will begin running your keyword searches by at least the week following your registration. You may not received any table of contents results for up to a month after registering, especially if all your periodical selections are published monthly or quarterly.

If you have any questions, please contact Henderson Library's Information Services desk, x5645.

ELECTRONIC DATABASES AND SERVICES

Electronic Access to ERIC Documents

Henderson Library recently purchased a subscription to E*Subscribe, a new service that offers online access to recent publications in the ERIC database. To get to this database, go to the Library's homepage and select Licensed Databases not on GALILEO. Select the link on this page labeled ERIC Documents 1996-present. You may also go directly to the E*Subscribe web site.

E*Subscribe provides unlimited access to about 80% of the ERIC documents from 1996 to the current Resources in Education (RIE) issue. Documents are provided in PDF format. Henderson Library has all available ERIC Documents on microfiche, as well. If you don't find the document you need through E*Subscribe, you may still come to the library to read it on microfiche. E*Subscribe is a service of the ERIC Document Reproduction Service. You may also use this service to purchase documents not available through the online service discussed here.

ERIC Documents include published and unpublished works of interest to members of the educational community. As each of these is contributed to ERIC, the contributor may elect to grant ERIC dissemination permission. E*Subscribe gives access to all documents which ERIC received permission to distribute electronically.

Announcing off Campus Access to Library Resources

Faculty, staff and students at Georgia Southern University will now be able to get full access to GALILEO, almost all the Library databases, and Library full-text electronic resources from anywhere. Thanks to the installation of a Citrix Winframe server, you may now use resources such as PsycLit, CCH Internet Research Network, or JSTOR that have been restricted to use within the library or on the campus network.

To gain off campus access, choose the Password access for off campus users link from the Library's homepage. You will need to install a plugin to your Internet browser (e.g Netscape or Internet Explorer) before you can use the Citrix server. Instructions on downloading and installing the plugin are available from the "Password access..." webpage. The password required is the GALILEO password for Georgia Southern, which changes each semester. Contact the library reference desk for the latest password. (The password is only available to faculty, staff and currently enrolled students.) More about getting the GALILEO password here.

This server is intended to allow those not currently connected to the campus network (or in the case of Romulan Databases, not in the Library) to get access to these resources. We ask you to try to get to the database you need without using the server first because resources on the Citrix server are limited.

Databases you might use the Citrix server for on campus (but not in the library) include: The Atlanta Journal & Constitution, Health and Psychosocial Instruments, PsycLIT, Shepard's Citations, and the Wall Street Journal.

Databases you might use the Citrix server for off campus include those listed above, plus: Alt HealthWatch, America: History and Life, Associations Unlimited, Biography and Genealogy Master Index. Biological Abstracts, CCH Internet Research Network, CCH Internet Tax Research Network, Directory of Publications and Broadcast Media, Discovering Authors, Encyclopedia Britannica (GALILEO),  ERIC Documents, ERIC, Ethnic Newswatch, Exploring Poetry, Exploring Shakespeare, Gale Business Resources, Gale Literary Databases, Historical Abstracts, JSTOR, Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe (GALILEO),  MARCive WebDOCS, A Matter of Fact, Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary (GALILEO),  Peterson's Grad Search, Peterson's Undergrad Search, Project Muse, SIRS Researcher, Sociofile, STAT-USA, and State Academies of Science Abstracts.

Journals Go Online

Three recent developments have allowed Henderson Library to dramatically expand the availability of full text and full image versions of journals.

  • Last summer we acquired access to the JSTOR collection of periodicals. It includes complete backfiles of core scholarly journals in the humanities, social sciences and sciences, many of which reach back to the late nineteenth century. JSTOR is available from the library's web page. Select Licensed Databases not on GALILEO and then select JSTOR.

  • This fall, GALILEO added full-image access to many articles found in UMI databases, including Periodical Abstracts and EBSCO Databases, including Academic Search Elite.

  • Finally, we have developed a list of journals that the Library subscribes to locally that are available online, directly from the publisher. That list is on the library's web page. Select Licensed Databases not on GALILEO and then select Electronic Journals. This list also incorporates the journals available from JSTOR, Academic Press, and Project Muse.

DR. DELMA E. PRESLEY'S RECENT GIFT

Dr. Delma Eugene Presley, Professor Emeritus of English and Director Emeritus of the Museum, has recently contributed two very significant groups of papers to the Library's Special Collections, both of which have provided material for works of his. The first group consists of 38 notebooks and hundreds of photographs which belonged to Dr. Francis Harper (1886-1972) and record his scientific observations of flora and fauna of the Okefinokee Swamp and the (now bygone) culture of the "Swampers," to whom he became strongly attached, from 1912 to 1951. Following Dr. Harper's death, Dr. Presley used these papers and photographs to write his 1981 book, Okefinokee Album. A website giving a sample of some photographs is available on the Library homepage under "What's New." The other group consists of previously-unknown and revealing internal records of the Georgia Land and Lumber Company, owned by Connecticut millionaire William E. Dodge (1805-1883), which bought vast tracts of pinelands in Georgia as well as other states. Disputes over proper title to many of the lots led to a land war in which a number of people were killed. Litigation continued for 40 years, until 1923. This period is the subject of Dr. Presley's play The Lighterd Knot, which is performed every fall in McRae. Special Collections is very pleased to have acquired these valuable original sources on two fascinating slices of Georgia history.

HENDERSON'S INTERLIBRARY LOAN SERVICE MEETS STANDARDS

A recent analysis of Henderson Library's interlibrary loan practices and policies indicates we are meeting or exceeding almost all of the standards and recommendations published by the Association of Research Libraries in Measuring the Performance of Interlibrary Loan Operations in North American Research and College Libraries. Highlights of the analysis, conducted by Fred Smith and Cynthia Frost of the Access Services Department, include

  • integrating technology into procedures to reduce costs and processing time, e.g. automated fee management
  • use of e-mail to notify borrowers that requested items have arrived, thus saving time and money
  • mailing photocopied articles to requesters instead of having requesters pick up the articles at the Library
  • enabling users to submit requests electronically
  • not charging users for fees that lending libraries may impose
  • processing most requests within 24 hours of receipt.

BUILDING UPDATE

Several projects have been under way recently. Library customers may have noticed huge cranes in use on several occasions in December. They were used to remove the original chiller in the heating/air-conditioning system and to replace it with a new one. This is another phase in an ongoing project to improve that system. The interior walls are being painted in phases in an effort to minimize disruption for customers and employees. Third and fourth floors have been completed, second floor is being painted now, and first floor will be painted last. Replacement of the roof is scheduled to begin in March, and the cleaning of the exterior of the building is in the planning stages for this year. Two other projects are in the planning stages. The complete replacement of the 6200 light fixtures within the building is being planned to save energy while improving light levels. The other current project will be the phased replacement of carpet throughout the building. Both of these projects will begin on third floor. One potential side benefit may be the rearrangement of the stacks on third and fourth floors so that they are parallel rather than perpendicular to the lights. This is being considered because all the stacks will have to be moved when the carpet is replaced. These are all projects which will improve conditions in the Library as the building nears its twenty-fifty anniversary in 2001. Questions/comments about Library building projects should be sent to Ann Hamilton via e-mail or at 681-5115.
